About Us
Our establishment was originally known as The Wheeler Hotel. It is the oldest existing commercial building in Townsend. It was built in 1898 by Charles Petersen, who came from Suring to capitalize on the need for a rest stop on the new Laona Line.
In the past, the hotel provided meals and lodging to lumbermen, railroaders, homesteaders, and weary travelers.
Eventually, Elmer Swanson from Lakewood bought the building and moved it to its present site in about 1940. The move took two weeks, as the crew used a team of horses with block and line (cables and pulleys).
As of 2021, the building is owned by Robby and Kasia Calaway, along with their kids and their little dog named Tipsy.
